Jazz Planets with Pete Long’s Echoes of Ellington Orchestra
Church Stretton School
Celebrating the 100th anniversary of Gustav Holst’s enduringly popular ‘The Planets’ Suite, written as Duke Ellington’s 60 year career began which would have him recognized as the foremost American composer of any genre. Pete Long and his Orchestra now bring the work of those two musical legends together in a glorious fusion of cosmic Ellington-esque in Jazz Planets. With a history of taking classical music and adapting it to his orchestra, Ellington had great success with the Nutcracker and Peer Gynt and Pete Long’s inspired arrangement so naturally following on is set to to become a classic of our time – Ellington distanced himself from ‘Jazz’ preferring his work referred to as ‘Music’ and is the best equipped of all composers to stand at the junction between the two worlds of Classical and Jazz.
Echoes of Ellington was formed in 1994 to celebrate the Duke’s music and is today in its finest incarnation yet. With the highest virtuoso players on all the instruments you can be sure of a sonic big band journey like no other – it amazed first this country then Europe and the USA by its ability to ‘get inside’ the scores and really bring out the Ellington essence. Conducted and presented by clarinettist Pete Long is the pre-eminent big band front man in the UK today. As well as his landmark Orchestra, Pete has spent his entire career playing a plethora of instruments ‘with’ and ‘for’ some of the greatest names in showbusiness including the likes of the Jools Holland and Ronnie Scott Orchestras, in chart smash ‘Handbags and Gladrags’ (bestselling single in 2002 and theme for The Office), and producing arrangements for Paul McCartney. Keeping you thoroughly entertained he will ensure you leave the show with a heightened understanding to enhance your musical experience.
